Ok so i got everything working on my late 98 Galaxy 2.8 v6 and then im driving down the road and can smell the air conditioning Think that smell must be the gas when i stop the floor in drivers foot well is filled with oil, The oil only seems to flow and i mean flow out when under loa and runs down the clutch foot pedal rest (as this is an auto) but is OK when the cc is set to either Hi or LOW its when you try to set a temperature for the cabin the oil leaks and the smell comes i i dont have the flashing light come on to tell me there is a problem and i know it will be a dash out job which i can handle but any ideas where the oil is coming from which part of the system is leaking and what parts might i need any help would be appreciated also if anyone can tell me where i can find system diagrams for the climate control and instructions on how to remove my dash it would be good many thanks.

Thanks but any ideas were the oil can leak from?

The only place it can be coming from is the evaporator core as shown in that thread - its the only bit of the A/C system thats inside the cabin.

If its running down the foot rest then you need to confirm its oil, there isn't that much oil in an A/C system so for it to be literally running down the foot rest and pooling yet the A/C system still working would make me very skeptical its A/C oil.

There was a reasonably common problem of the drain pipe either becoming detached or blocked. When the A/C is working a lot of moisture will be produced and this is disposed of out through the bulkhead and on to the road below (normally!) - I would check this pipe isn't blocked or detached before anything else.

Im not to good with air condition and climate control but am a fast learner so hopefully will be by the end off this lol. so a few questions does the galaxy have a heater matrix separate so as to use when the temp is set to hi on the CC and used to blend air to keep cabin temp even, this would explain why i am getting hot air yet not when the auto or econ button is pressed and any other selection than hi is selected. The CC did get cold after the first leak but once i was travelling leak happened again where the fluid started running out (i could see it running down the rest) so i switched it off straight away i suppose it could have been that the temp outside was below 4 oc making the air feel cold but there is enough leakage to fill the carpet under the matt and soak the matt it feels like oil to the touch slips on your fingers and im sure it is oil or something other than water but what else could it be is there anything other than oil gas and water it could be, I really dont think its water ive also noticed that the windscreen and front windows now keep fogging up which is a real pain also is the smell i can smell dangerous?

OK so maybe its not oil as theres that much off it. Maybe it is water and maybe the over flow pipe has come of (i sure hope so) what would the associated sell be ? so my next question can i fix this without removing the dash? im sure the cc would shut down to avoid damage if it was anything else im going to have to take it to pieces soon i just like to no exactly what im looking at before attempting such work.

Think i found the problem im sure it the heater matrix there is allot of water and the low water warning light came on today so im gonna replace heater matrix still a dash out job

Posted (edited)

I no i cant win can i lol But im gonna just bridge the pipe work in the engine bay for the time being but the good news is i found a new matrix and a Galaxy breakers not 15 miles from where i live

Hi,

Just check that your rear screenwash is working first.

I have recently noticed that my pipe was disconnected (all be it in the passenger footwell) and merrily filling up the matting under the carpets with a slippery to touch liquid (i.e. screenwash!) - an easy fix but one i must make a proper go of.

There is a good post of this somewhere on the forum!

Good luck.
